The global search engine, Google, has released a list of top 10 most searched for individuals in Nigeria since 2008.
According to the Google Nigeria Country Director, Juliet Ehimuan-Chiazor, in a statement recently made available to Saturday Tribune, the list is symbolic of the continued relevance of these individuals in the creative industry and the dynamics of online search since a decade ago.
Ehimuan-Chiazor speaking in commemoration of Google’s 20th anniversary also inferred that the individuals in the most searched for list contribute immensely to the overall Google yearly search index of one trillion among 103 million Nigerian Google users.
Linda Ikeji topped the list of the top 10 Most Searched for Individuals on Google Nigeria, followed by Wizkid, Olamide, Davido and Phyno respectively. Other most searched for names in Nigeria include Muhammadu Buhari, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Rihanna and Nicki Minaj.
“Search has taken a different shape from what it was in 1998,” Ehimuan-Chiazor said. “Far from simply being a way to find information, it has become a crucial social and economic tool.
“Even though technology has changed, people’s tastes have remained largely consistent over the past decade.
“The list of the most searched for people on Google in Nigeria since 2008 show that many of them are still relevant today.
“Looking forward, therefore there’s little doubt that the evolution of Search over the next 20 years will be as dramatic as the past 20. And, with an online population of 103 million, there’s every chance that Nigeria will be at the forefront of that evolution”, she said.
Founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, with the aim of organising the world’s information, Google’s Search Index now contains hundreds of billions of web pages and is well over 100 000 000 gigabytes in size.
