Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp all go down during major outage
Multiple social media platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, are currently down.
Downdetector outage reports show that every Facebook platform has been affected. This includes Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.
“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products,” Facebook wrote in a tweet sent Monday afternoon. “We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.
Instagram’s public relations team also tweeted about the outage, saying they were having “a bit of a hard time right now.”
While the cause of the outage hasn’t been announced, security experts said it may have been triggered by an internal mistake, Reuters reported. They added that sabotage by an insider was also a theoretical possibility, while an outside hack was thought to be less likely.
Facebook’s stock was down more than 5% on Monday afternoon.
It is not clear when the social media sites will be restored.
